Signal-to-noise ratio

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Just wanted to update with a definition of Signal to Noise as it came up when we were discussing ‘Marketing’.  Essentially, it’s an engineering term but we’re using it with regard to the marketing of www.woosabi.com in that the effectiveness of our communication (blog, pr, etc) should be analysed using this concept. Basically, how much of what we say/write is noise (waste) and how much is signal (valueable). And of the signal, does it communicate effectively the point.

This is what wikipedia has to say:

Signal-to-noise ratio (often abbreviated SNR or S/N) is an electrical engineering concept, also used in other fields (such as scientific measurements, biological cell signaling and oral lore), defined as the ratio of a signal power to the noise power corrupting the signal.

In less technical terms, signal-to-noise ratio compares the level of a desired signal (such as music) to the level of background noise. The higher the ratio, the less obtrusive the background noise is.”
